Asbestos fears on Melb wall collapse site

A Melbourne building site where a wall collapsed, narrowly missing a woman pushing a pram, will be tested for asbestos.

The wall of the former Royal Park Hotel, on the corner of Queensberry Street and Howard Street in North Melbourne, collapsed about 8.30am on Wednesday.

The CFMEU says it raised safety concerns on Tuesday about the way the former hotel was being demolished.

Worksafe inspected the site on Tuesday and ordered the demolition company not to work on the wall but allowed it to continue working on other parts of the building.

The rest of the building was supposed to be demolished on Wednesday afternoon, but that work was stopped amid asbestos fears.

A hygienist is expected to test the site on Thursday.
