Man arrested hours from crime scene where body found in rural Victoria

A man has been arrested after a body was discovered by emergency services responding to a grass fire in rural Victoria.

The deceased, who is yet to be formally identified, was located near Cemetery Road and Knight Road in the town of Quambatook, about 300km north-west of Melbourne, about 6.30am yesterday, police said.

A 67-year-old man, who lives in Quambatook, was arrested without incident this morning in the Welshmans Reef area, about 165km from where the body was found.

Both small towns have populations of less than 250 people.

He will now be interviewed as police continue to investigate the suspicious death.
