Appeal against Bendigo mosque plans

A group of residents have opened a new front in their bid to overturn plans to build a mosque in Bendigo.

The group has lodged an appeal against a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal decision to approve the project.

"It's been lodged with the Victorian Court of Appeal," lawyer Robert Balzola told AAP on Saturday.

Mr Balzola is acting for Bendigo woman Julie Hoskin.

The local council approved the mosque for Bendigo in mid-2014 despite vocal protests and a social media campaign run by opponents.

The opponents later failed to have the council's approval overturned by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

The tribunal found there was no evidence the mosque would cause "any significant social or other effects to the community".

About 300 anti-mosque protesters broke through police barricades last week and clashed with anti-racism groups on the steps of the Bendigo Town Hall.

There were no arrests, but police used capsicum spray to break up some minor scuffles.
