Police are searching for two men suspected of hitting and injuring a cyclist in Melbourne's south-west.

Police believe an unregistered scooter collided with the cyclist on the Laverton Creek Trail near Victoria Street about 6.30pm yesterday in Altona Meadows.

The 51-year-old cyclist was flung into the bushes by the impact and found by passersby, who notified police.

Witness Belinda Formosa said the victim was "bleeding all over the footpath".

"His bone, or leg was quite broken," she told 9News.

"I just made sure everything was okay and that another guy had covered him in a blanket.

"It's pretty awful just to leave him there like that."

The unregistered scooter, a helmet and chain were found at the scene after the two men allegedly left on foot.

The men were last seen running northbound towards Victoria Street after what police described as a "hit-run collision".
