Alleged boat terrorists in Vic custody

FIVE ALLEGED "TINNIE TERRORISTS" BEHIND BARS IN VICTORIA

WHAT WE KNOW:

* Five Melbourne men, whose passports had been cancelled, are in custody after fronting court.

* They're aged 21-31.

* They allegedly planned to travel to Syria or northern Iraq, via Indonesia, to join Islamic State.

* The men were arrested near Cairns on May 10 towing a seven-metre boat to Cape York.

* It's the first alleged attempt to leave by boat to join IS, the government says.

* The men allegedly bought a car, trailer and boat before starting their journey.

HOW IT UNFOLDED:

* Warrants executed, eight in Melbourne and one in Queensland.

* The men are charged with making preparations for incursions into foreign countries to engage in hostile activities.

* Robert "Musa" Cerantonio, Shayden Thorne, Kadir Kaya, Antonio Granata and Paul Dacre appear in a Cairns court on May 16 - their extradition is granted.

* The group fly to Melbourne, with security, on a chartered plane and are taken to court.

* They don't apply for bail.

WHY NOT LET THEM GO:

* Allowing people to fight in Syria can cause them to come back more radicalised, authorities say.

* It's illegal.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT:

* Police prepare a brief of evidence.

* The men front court again in September.
