Man admitted killing wife with axe: court

A Melbourne man walked into a police station the day after Mother's Day, admitted killing his wife with an axe and began to sob, according to court documents.

Constable Ryan O'Donnell was working in the Broadmeadows watch house on May 11 last year when Dursun Yildiz, 50, turned himself in, the court documents allege.

Yildiz had scratches on his neck and said he had accidentally cut himself with the axe while cutting his wife, Const O'Donnell said in a statement.

Yildiz then put his head on his arm and began to sob.

"Because I did this I want to commit suicide," Mr Yildiz allegedly said to police.

"I accept everything and I want to go to court straight away."

Yildiz appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with murdering his wife of 30 years, Seker Yildiz, 60.

Mrs Yildiz' body was discovered in the couple's home the same day her husband went to the police.

He told police he had never hurt her before, or had an argument with her.

The partner of Ms Yildiz's son from a first marriage, Tuba Aslan, said in a statement that Yildiz, who she called "Uncle", was an unhappy man who would rarely speak to people.

"Uncle would always put Seker down in front of us, and would imply that she was illiterate and did not understand anything," Ms Aslan said in a statement.

She said she went to the couple's rented house on Mother's Day, May 10, with flowers for Seker but didn't see her.

After she knocked on the door Yildiz yelled out, "Why are you here? What do you want?" so she left.

"I thought Uncle's behaviour was very strange," she said.

"I was in shock with how he had spoken to me."

The committal hearing continues.
