Adam Bardic was allegedly on a violent crime rampage the day he is accused of slashing a female paramedic across the chest in front of her young children.

The 47-year-old is accused of using a blue box cutter knife to assault the off-duty paramedic as she strapped her children into her car on the Mornington Peninsula on Friday.

On the same day he allegedly assaulted a couple with a tomahawk and hammer, smashed up a car, pinched two laptops, broke a glass door at a takeaway shop and stole another car, Melbourne Magistrates Court has been told.

Bardic looked dishevelled in court on Thursday when he faced 17 charges including assault and intentionally causing serious injury.

His lawyer told the brief hearing that Bardic took prescription drugs for "ongoing psychiatric illnesses".

Bardic's case was adjourned until October 11.
