Melbourne CBD accused driver assessed

The driver accused of mowing down pedestrians in Melbourne's CBD will undergo psychiatric assessment to see if he is fit to stand trial.

Saeed Noori, 33, is charged with 18 counts of attempted murder, one of murder and one of reckless conduct endangering death after he allegedly drove into pedestrians on the corner of Flinders and Elizabeth streets on December 21.

During a committal mention in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday, Noori's matter was adjourned until July 3 to allow time for a psychiatric report examining issues of mental impairment and fitness to stand trial.

Noori's lawyer Chen Yang told the court his client was booked for psychiatric assessment on June 8 and it was necessary, given Noori's behaviour in hospital after the incident and materials provided to the court.

Noori appeared in court wearing a white t-shirt and did not speak, but nodded to his lawyer.

He is an Afghan refugee and Australian citizen with known mental health and drug problems.

The alleged attack left 20 people, including Noori and an off-duty police officer who arrested him, hospitalised.
