Accused baby death driver was drunk: court

A driver was allegedly three times over the legal alcohol limit when he caused a crash that killed a baby girl on Victoria's Phillip Island just before Christmas.

Blake Chadwick, 24, appeared before the Melbourne Magistates' Court on Friday charged with culpable driving causing death and other driving offences after a 15-month-old girl died following a crash in December.

It's alleged Chadwick had a blood alcohol content of 0.156 after the smash on December 17, court documents show.

The Nar Nar Goon man also faces charges of dangerous driving causing death, conduct endangering life, driving under the influence of liquor, and failing to stop at a stop sign, and failing to stop at a red light.

It's understood Chadwick's car struck another car carrying a family of four at the intersection of Smiths Beach Road and Back Beach Road at 7.30pm that day.

The 15-month-old girl was airlifted to hospital but died a short time later.

Two adults and another child in the car were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The four passengers in the car allegedly driven by Chadwick were not injured.

The 24-year-old has been ordered not to drive as part of his bail conditions and will return to court in May.
