Vandals have left a repair bill for $50,000 after a rampage that has closed a popular swimming pool east of Melbourne.

Police say a gang slashed Kilsyth Centenary Pool's famous inflatable dome and caused it to collapse in the early hours of Tuesday.

The pool, known as the 'Home of the Dome' is located at the foot of the Yarra Valley.

The pool's website says the pool is closed until further notice.

"We are extremely disappointed to announce that overnight vandals slashed the inflatable canvas dome that covers Kilsyth pool," the website says.

"As a result, the pool is likely to be closed for some time. We are assessing the damage and will be looking to find a solution to get the pool reopened as soon as possible."

The pool's Facebook page confirmed the pool is unable to provide swimming lessons or casual swimming until further notice.

Acting Detective Sergeant Sharon Congreve has appealed for witnesses to come forward.

"It's a large amount of damage, so it's possible that someone may know who is responsible," she said.
