150 trainees to be hired for Link project

At least 150 apprentices and trainees will help build the first stage of Victoria's East West link.

The apprentices and trainees will be among 3700 workers employed by East West Connect to build the road tunnel project.

Premier Denis Napthine said young people training in building and engineering industries would have the chance to build skills on one of the state's biggest projects.

"This is a huge boon to young people across Victoria," he told reporters.

Contracts for the project, which will connect the Eastern Freeway and CityLink, were signed last week immediately after the High Court rejected a resident's bid for an injunction.

The $6.8 billion stage one project includes $3.3 billion from the East West Connect consortium and $1.5 billion from the federal government.

Labor has vowed to rip up the contract if it wins the November 29 state election.
