1.1 million votes still to count in Vic

The 2.5 million votes cast by Victorians at polling booths on Saturday have been counted, and the focus now shifts to the 1.1 million pre-poll and postal votes.

Victorian Electoral Commission workers spent Sunday sorting the pre-poll votes - lodged at early voting centres before election day - into piles by electorate.

These votes have to be trucked to their home electorate and added to the official tally there.

"The big exercise today, we've got 3000 staff working on it, is the sorting and reconciliation of all the early votes that we took during the last two weeks," VEC communications manager Sue Lang told AAP.

"They need to be trucked all around the state to where they'll be counted."

Also on Sunday, a sample of 2000 postal votes were also counted for each electorate.

An extra 1000 postal votes were counted for the Melbourne seat of Prahran, one of seven lower house seats where the outcome is very close.

"The ones that we're closely monitoring at the moment are Shepparton, Prahran, South Barwon, Bentleigh, Frankston, Morwell and Ripon," Mrs Lang also said.

"We expect some of the clearer districts that are obvious will be declared by Wednesday onwards, but we'll have them all done by Friday."
