Victorian teen killed after leaning out of train

A teenager is dead after he leaned out of a train in suburban Melbourne and was hit by a trackside object.

The 17-year-old boy was struck by the object about 200 metres away from Malvern station.

The boy, from Beaumaris, had been travelling with friends in the rear carriage of the train when the accident occurred about 9.20pm on Friday.

Emergency crews treated him at the scene and he was taken to hospital, where he died shortly before 11pm.

The boy's friends were uninjured, and police are investigating the circumstances before the incident.
