The stabbing of a woman during a Melbourne home invasion may have been a case of mistaken identity, police say.

The man broke into the woman's Meadow Heights home about 2am (AEDT) on Monday and stabbed the 40-year-old woman during an altercation.

She was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police are describing it as an aggravated burglary and say the offender remains on the run.

Police say it was either a random attack or a case of mistaken identity.

The offender is described as being a young man with short, fair hair, who was wearing blue jeans and a black t-shirt.

An information caravan will be set up near the home at 11.30am on Wednesday.
