Vic set for uncomfortable Saturday night

Melbourne is in for an uncomfortable Saturday night, with temperatures not predicted to drop below 30C.

Temperatures will reach 40C on Saturday, and are not set to fall significantly until a cool change comes through mid-morning on Sunday.

It means the record for Melbourne's highest February overnight low could be challenged.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Andrea Peace said the record of 30.5C goes back to 1902.

"It's pretty unlikely that we are going to exceed that, but it's not without a chance given that we are expecting to see the northerly winds continue throughout the night," she told reporters on Friday.

"It has been a long-standing record, so it is going to take a lot to break that."

Ms Peace said hot, dry and windy weather is forecast across the state for Saturday, with highs of between 37C and 42C forecast.

The hot weather will affect sporting events, with the start of Saturday's stage of the Herald Sun Tour brought forward one hour, while horse racing at Caulfield will also start earlier.

Ambulance crews are urging people attending festivals and events this weekend to party safely and look after themselves.

"If you are going to have alcohol, we suggest you drink plenty of water with it," Ambulance Victoria operations manager Paul Holman said.

"Moderate your behaviour this weekend."

Ms Peace said 2014 had been characterised by hot and dry weather, with Victoria experiencing its sixth highest daytime temperatures on record in January.

She said there is the potential for some tropical moisture to move into the state by the end of next week and end the hot weather.
