Mornington Peninsula fire now under control

The bushfire that had threatened homes on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula is now under control.

Firefighters were able to contain the fast-moving bushfire, which was heading towards suburban homes in Hastings, Bittern and Crib Point late this afternoon.

The warning has now been downgraded to a 'watch and act' message, which means people should be ready to leave their homes.

The Country Fire Authority said there has been some damage to houses south of Reid Parade.

The fire was first reported just after 2pm.

Resident Barbara Tipper, who had initially fled the fires, said she had noticed the fire moving towards her home in Bittern from Hastings, and she rushed home to pack her personal belongings.

"It was getting pretty scary," she told ABC 24.

"There's lots of smoke and we have no hope if a fire gets in here."

As she left Bittern, the roads were jammed as other residents fled the fire, Ms Tipper said.

The fire has caused a suspension of trains on the line from Frankston to Stony Point.

Weather conditions are still unpredictable, and residents should stay close to shelter and monitor warnings, the CFA says.
