Vic premier flags arson crackdown

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine has flagged tougher laws against arsonists, including electronic monitoring.

Dr Napthine said the government is considering making arsonists wear ankle bracelets, so if a person with a record of arson lived in the city and was in the Dandenongs on a hot day, police could be alerted and bring them home.

"We would certainly (be) looking at that, that is the sort of thing we would be looking at to make sure that we have these arsonists under control," he told Fairfax Radio on Thursday.

"Too many of our fires are lit by arsonists. Fires lit by arsonists are the absolute bane of our life and absolutely get up the noses of our hardworking CFA and MFB volunteers and professionals."

Dr Napthine said he would work with Attorney-General Robert Clark to make sure the government was doing everything it could to crack down on those breaking the law by setting fires.
