Vic pair face landlord manslaughter charge

A Melbourne couple now face manslaughter charges over an alleged attack on their former landlord, who died after he managed to dial triple-zero.

Kristy Robb, 27, and her boyfriend Gino Rachele, 41, are accused of using a baseball bat and steel bar to bash a 69-year-old man in his Noble Park home in January.

Alan Matthews managed to call emergency services, identifying his attackers, but he died before help could arrive, the Melbourne Magistrates Court has previously heard.

Charges of intentionally causing serious injury were upgraded when the couple were brought before the court on Friday.

"Your honour, an additional charge has been filed for each today, a charge of manslaughter," prosecutor Amina Bhai told Magistrate Peter Reardon.

Lawyer Peter Morrissey, representing Rachele, said this was expected.

"Although the charges of manslaughter have been filed today, they have been long anticipated," he said.

The magistrate set a committal hearing date of August 18.

There was no application for bail for Robb, of Hallam, who was remanded into custody. Rachele, of Narre Warren, remains on bail.
