Vic Nats MP and minister to stand down

Nationals MP and Higher Education Minister Peter Hall will step down at the November election after 25 years in the Victorian parliament.

The Eastern Victoria region MP, who is the leader of the Nationals in the upper house, says he wants to devote more time to his family.

"I feel that it is time I give more of my time to family and interests outside of parliament," he said in a statement on his website on Monday.

Mr Hall told Premier Denis Napthine and Deputy Premier Peter Ryan on Thursday.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in parliament and in particular the last three years as a minister of the Crown," Mr Hall said.

"I am extremely grateful for the support of my constituents throughout the seven terms of parliament."

Mr Ryan, the Nationals leader, said Mr Hall had earned respect from all sides of politics.

"Peter has been an outstanding advocate for Gippsland and achieved a great deal in supporting the needs of local communities for more than two decades," Mr Ryan said.

As a former teacher, Mr Hall brought his depth of experience to his ministerial roles and enjoyed a close working relationship with the skills sector, Mr Ryan said.

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews wished Mr Hall the best for life after politics but said he would be remembered as the minister that "gutted" the TAFE system.

Mr Hall, who is also the minister responsible for the teaching profession, is the third Nationals MP to this month announce they will leave politics at the November 29 poll.

Sports Minister Hugh Delahunty and Aboriginal Affairs and Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell won't recontest their seats of Lowan and Shepparton respectively.
