Vic man jailed over fatal hit and run

A man has been jailed over a Victorian hit and run collision that killed an elderly woman.

Jessica Bell, 90, was struck by a reversing car in Shepparton in September 2011. She died hours later.

Remo Sarikaya, 33, was found guilty earlier this year of dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop and render assistance after an accident.

Victorian County Court Judge David Parsons said Sarikaya had tried to avoid responsibility for the collision, and tried to hide the damage to his car.

"You callously disregarded the duties you owed to your fellow road users," he said.

"I have no doubt that you sought to run away."

Sarikaya, of Mooroopna, was on Friday jailed for five years, with a non-parole period of at least three and half years.
