Vic man jailed for cannabis 'crop sitting'

A "crop sitter" found with dozens of cannabis plants and nearly $30,000 in cash at his Melbourne home has been jailed for 28 months.

Billel Kassar, 24, pleaded guilty to cultivating a commercial crop of cannabis after 39 plants and $29,940 in cash were found at his Werribee home in October 2012.

At the time Kassar told police the plants were all his own, but his lawyers told the Victorian County Court that he was a "crop sitter" for other people, and lacked the resources to set up a drug operation.

Judge Christopher O'Neill on Friday said he accepted it was likely Kassar was not heavily involved in establishing the crop.

Kasssar also pleaded guilty to electricity theft and dealing with property suspected as being the proceeds of crime.

Judge O'Neill sentenced Kassar to two years and four months in prison with a non-parole period of 14 months.
