Vic Liberal Philip Davis leaves parliament

Victorian Liberal MP Philip Davis' parliamentary career of more than 20 years will end this week.

The Eastern Victorian region upper house MP announced last year he would not contest the November state election, but agreed to remain in parliament until a suitable replacement could be found.

Upper House reform instituted in 2003 meant a by-election would not be required, he said.

The Liberal party has pre-selected and endorsed Andrew Ronalds, who is expected to be sworn in on Thursday.

Mr Davis, who was first elected in 1992, said in a statement on Monday he had timed his resignation to enable a smooth transition for the new MP.

He commended Mr Ronalds as he announced his formal resignation on Monday.

"Andrew Ronalds has been successful in business and agriculture and will make a fine representative for Gippsland and Eastern Victoria," Mr Davis said.
