Victoria will give legal advice to asylum seekers left in limbo when the federal government removed legal aid funding in 2014.

The 11,000 "legacy caseload" arrivals who landed between August 2012 and January 2014 will get advice on their visas and immigration cases thanks to a grant to Refugee Legal.

"This is about helping those who have risked their lives in the hope of making a better life for themselves in Australia," Attorney-General Martin Pakula said on Sunday.
