Vic govt vigilante fear on sex register

The Victorian government says it has no plans to publicly release sex offender details because it may provoke vigilante attacks.

Plans by broadcaster Derryn Hinch for a national public sex offenders register are almost complete and he hopes the murder of Daniel Morcombe will force politicians to act.

But a spokesman for Victorian Corrections Minister Edward O'Donohue said the government had no plans to make changes to the sex offenders register, which is used to manage and keep track of sex offenders.

"The government has no plans to publicly release offender details which may provoke or allow vigilante attacks," the spokesman said.

Victorian Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said he had been asked a similar question in relation to a state-based register of violent offenders.

"Labor's always open to have a look at any idea that might make our community safer, and that might empower people," he told reporters in Melbourne.
