A push to deny abortions for women who are more than 20 weeks' pregnant has been rejected by the Victorian government.

A private member's bill that calls for a change in the existing law, which was introduced in 2008 to decriminalise abortion, will be put to the parliament during the next sitting week.

The renewed pro-life campaign was unveiled on Saturday at a March for the Babies rally outside the state parliament.

But Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the government had rejected the push as abortion is a matter for women and their doctors.
