Vic fire stops burning after two months

A bushfire burning for almost two months in Victoria has been contained.

Multiple lightning strikes started fires in mid-January, burning more than 170,000 hectares in far East Gippsland.

Firefighters say at least 50 properties were impacted by the fires, with 11 houses and 14 other buildings destroyed and pasture, fencing and more than 200 livestock lost.

Orbost incident controller Andy Gillham said residents of East Gippsland would be left with the task of rebuilding.

He thanked Parks Victoria, firefighters and residents for helping bring the blazes under control.

"The support we've all had from local businesses and organisations has been tremendous, with many people working tirelessly to help us get through this," Mr Gillham said.

The Goongerah-Deddick Trail fire burnt 165,772 hectares, mostly within the Snowy River National Park, while the the Club Terrace-Goolengook River fire burnt 8063 hectares.

Mr Gillham said base camps set up for firefighters at Newmerella and Delegate were packing up and would be gone by the weekend.
