Vic crossing removal to cut congestion

The Victorian government says it is well on the way to keeping its promise to remove five level crossings, as it opened a bridge over a railway line in Melbourne's west.

The removal of the level crossing on Anderson Road at Sunshine was completed during a three-week shutdown of the Sunbury, Bendigo and Ballarat rail lines, which concluded on Monday morning.

It means the road, which carries 25,000 vehicles a day, will pass over the rail line, eliminating the risk of collisions between vehicles and trains.

Congestion will be reduced while cars will also not be stuck at boom gates for extended periods of time, Victorian Premier Denis Napthine said.

There have been several deaths at Victorian level crossings, including the 2007 Kerang rail disaster that killed 11 people.

Dr Napthine said several other level crossings were currently being removed, including another one on the same road and one in Springvale in Melbourne's east.

"We will deliver on those five level crossings, we have got another seven in the planning stage," he told reporters.

"We as a government have rolled up our sleeves and delivered on level crossing removals."

The removal is part of the Regional Rail Link project which is building separate tracks for suburban and regional trains.

Labor says it will sell the Port of Melbourne to fund the removal of the city's worst 50 level crossings.
