Road, walks reopen in Vic Grampians

Major roads, walks and campsites in Victoria's Grampians region have reopened as fire crews continue to work on a 55,000 hectare blaze in the area.

Crews worked on containment lines around the massive blaze on Wednesday as the state prepares for more hot weather next week.

The number of houses destroyed has risen to at least 32 as authorities tally the damage wrought by the inferno, which was brought under control on Monday night.

Firefighters will spend coming days backburning to secure the fire edges before the temperatures hit the high 30s early next week.

The focus is to strengthen control lines and ensure the fire remains within current control lines, fire authorities say.

A number major roads in the area have reopened, including the Grampians Tourist Road, which links Halls Gap with the southern Grampians town of Dunkeld.

Many Grampians campsites and walks including Silverband Falls and the Venus Baths are open, with tourists encouraged to return to the area.

The MacKenzie Falls, Zumsteins Picnic ground and the Hollow Mountain area have been significantly affected by fire and will remain closed.

Recovery works in those areas may take some time, authorities say.

The state and federal governments announced on Wednesday that they will provide joint assistance to local councils to help them in the clean-up.

The assistance is in addition to the joint assistance for affected individuals and families announced on Sunday.

The assistance is available for the bushfire affected local government areas of Ararat, Horsham, East Gippsland, Hindmarsh, Mildura, Northern Grampians, Southern Grampians, West Wimmera and Yarriambiack.
