Vic police chief abused while cycling

A loudmouth Victorian motorist will think twice about abusing cyclists after unwittingly shouting down the state's police commissioner.

Commissioner Ken Lay said he was riding his bike in a charity event in country Victoria at the weekend when he stopped to help a friend change his tyre.

He said a ute driver, who did not recognise him, hurled abuse at him.

"Obviously one of the locals down there didn't have a great affection for cyclists and made some comments as he went past," Mr Lay told Fairfax Radio on Wednesday.

Mr Lay said the man was later reminded about the importance of being courteous.

"He did get a visit from my people a couple of hours later," he said.

"We had a conversation about sharing the road and behaving appropriately."
