Vic coal mine fire clean-up costs $15m

Cleaning up the Morwell coal mine fire has already cost the Victorian government $15 million, with more to come.

The Hazelwood mine fire burned for more than a month in January and February, forcing elderly and sick residents to leave part of the regional Victorian town.

The bushfire response measures cost $15.1 million in the 2013/14 financial year, and another $4.1 million has been set aside in the 2014/15 budget.

Personal hardship respite and relocation assistance cost $3.7 million, while restoring fire-damaged major roads cost $3.3 million.

The majority of the new funding - $2.4 million - is set aside for environmental monitoring of Morwell's air and water quality levels.
