Veterans' families to get direct advocate

Families of Australia's veterans will soon have a direct advocate inside the defence force.

The new position of the Veteran Family Advocate was set up as part of the federal government's moves to address a rise in veteran suicides.

Legislation introduced to federal parliament on Wednesday would establish the position.

Veterans Affairs Minister Darren Chester said the advocate would work with families and ex-service organisations to help defence assist veterans.

"The government cannot solve the complex problems faced by veterans without the assistance of their families," Mr Chester told parliament.

A rolling inquiry into veteran suicides was announced by the government in February, with Mr Chester saying legislation for the inquiry would be introduced later this year.
