Television legend and former 9NEWS Sydney newsreader Brian Henderson has revealed he is undergoing treatment for throat cancer.

Mr Henderson, 83, has already survived bowel, prostate and skin cancer and has vowed to beat this one too.

"Doctors have been very positive, I think I'm lucky, I really think I'm lucky and it's an object lesson really in checking up on even the smallest thing," he said.

While at the GP for a regular check-up, wife Mardi prompted "Hendo" to mention he was experiencing a tickle in his throat that wasn't going away.

He will now undergo six weeks of radiation therapy.

"I'm not exactly looking forward to it, but I repeat, I'm lucky it was found, that's why I'm lucky," he said.

Mr Henderson anchored the 9NEWS Sydney 6pm bulletin between 1964 and 2002 and hosted music show Bandstand nationally from 1958 to 1972.

He was inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame last year.
