Vegemite flavoured hamburgers, sausages on the market

There's a new way to taste an old Aussie classic, with a special sausage and burger now developed with a Vegemite-inspired twist.

The salty spread has been added to a limited edition sausage being stocked by Coles supermarkets across Australia, with the flavours of lamb, cheese and Vegemite all combined in the casing.

"We've only made a small amount, because we want to see whether our customers love it or loathe it," Coles spokesperson Martin Alpins told 9NEWS.

A burger developed with the spread is also being served up at the Australian Open, with ballkids playing the role of official taste-testers.

The creation is the work of celebrity chef Neil Perry for the Burger Project restaurant chain.

Those behind the Vegemite brand say the collaborations are proof Australians are willing to experiment with the spread.

"You can have Vegemite on your toast in the morning, but you can also have it for lunch and for dinner, every day of the week" Matt Gray, Marketing Manager for Vegemite said.
