Crazed van driver nearly wipes out pedestrian on footpath

Police are hunting two men who were in a stolen van that mounted Melbourne city footpaths to escape officers.

Highway Patrol first noticed the white Mitsubishi Express driving south on King Street near Spencer Street about 8.30am yesterday.

Switching on their sirens, police followed the van as it made a left onto Little Lonsdale.

The van then mounted the footpath just before William Street, police said.

Officers lost sight of the vehicle, which minutes later screamed into the driveway of a Queen Street apartment complex from the wrong side of the road.

CCTV shows a man wearing a dark hoodie and jeans jump out of the passenger side and fleeing on foot.

He is quickly followed by the driver, who is dressed in high-vis tradie's clothing and runners.

Stand-in building manager Matt told 9NEWS the pair mounted a median strip and almost collected a man on his way to work.

That man can be seen on camera approaching the driveway to remonstrate.

The van allegedly contained a stolen motorcycle.
