Two of the most senior figures in the Trump administration are headed to Australia to take part in security talks.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary James Mattis will travel to Sydney next Monday to meet with their Australian counterparts.

"I anticipate that our discussion will cover a whole range of challenges that we face including North Korea, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and also the tensions in the South China Sea," Foreign Minister Julie Bishop told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.
