A Wisconsin doctor has been praised for also extending his services to help repair the toy of a boy following surgery.

A photo of urologist Dr Travis W. Groth “making the extra effort” to stitch up a stuffed Monsters Inc. toy for a young patient was posted to the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Facebook page in late December.

It has since gone viral, receiving thousands of reactions.

Mr Groth, 44, told TODAY US his kind action was inspired by how “extremely attached” owner Ryan appeared to the toy.

"With this little guy, I think it made a huge difference," he said.

"(Toys relax) them and from a recovery aspect it helps that they can relate to something."

Mr Groth is reported to have repaired a number of such toys over the course of his career.

Parents of other patients whose toys have been repaired at the hospital have since replied to the original post, thanking the staff for going “the extra mile”.
