South Australian residents will be able to book a direct flight from Adelaide to the United States in a move decades in the making.

The flights will return to the US in the afternoons.

The 257 Boeing Dreamliner planes will seat 2500 people and take South Australian travellers to the US in about 15 hours.

United's move leaves Qantas still on the outer, not servicing Adelaide internationally since 2013, but many are hopeful this will put new pressure on the national carrier.

"All these other brands are calling Adelaide home before Qantas, so hopefully it's a bit of a motivator for Qantas to get things happening as quickly as possible," South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said.

"It'll be really good for Adelaide to fly direct and cut out that leg to Melbourne and Sydney," one traveller told 9News.

"I'm looking forward to that because my daughter is planning on going to America at Christmas time," another said.
