The incoming United States ambassador to Australia admits he is still figuring out his role in managing relations between two nations on military engagement in the Middle East.

US President Donald Trump is pushing ahead with plans to withdraw American troops from Syria, and his administration is urging Australia to "take responsibility" for home-grown extremists captured in battle.

Asked about his approach to the two points of tension, Arthur Culvahouse explained that he saw himself as a conduit for discussions between ministers.

"I'm still finding my role," Mr Culvahouse told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.

"But I was privileged to sit in on a meeting with Foreign Minister (Marise) Payne and Secretary (Mike) Pompeo, where these issues were discussed, and I think they will continue to be discussed at that level.

"I would look forward to facilitating a continuation of those discussions."
