An upended Ford Mustang is causing heavy traffic delays in eastern Melbourne.

The car is sitting almost vertically after it mounted a a pole - or a guy wire - in Kew just before 7.30am.

VicRoads says the female driver from Fairfield, believed to be aged in her 20s, escaped uninjured.

The car is blocking entry to the Chandler Highway and all southbound lanes are closed.

There are major delays on the highway as well as Grange Road and Heidelberg Road.

Emergency services are heading to the scene.

Police have warned passing drivers to resist the temptation of whipping out their phones, saying four drivers have already been fined.
