Unis join business to boost productivity

Universities and business are joining to make sure students get more hands-on experience in a bid to fortify Australia's economy.

The partnership between educators and peak business groups will be announced by Universities Australia(UA) chairwoman Sandra Harding at the National Press Club on Wednesday.

The Business Council of Australia, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Australian Industry Group and the Australian Collaborative Education Network have signed the agreement with Universities Australia.

They promise to increase opportunities for work-integrated learning - getting practical experience while studying - and improve those opportunities already available.

This collaboration between universities and business is crucial to improving global standings on competitiveness and innovation and to fortify the economy, the agreement states.

UA chief executive Belinda Robinson says this will ultimately boost employment and productivity.

University graduates gain the skills they need to use their up-to-date knowledge while employers benefit from being able to better use skilled, productive workers.

"With jobs lost as the economy adjusts to the closure of some manufacturing plants, it is vital that we foster an environment that promotes entrepreneurship and innovation in lifting growth and expanding employment opportunities," Ms Robinson said.
