UN move will 'starve' terrorists: Bishop

A UN Security Council resolution backed by Australia will help starve terrorist groups of funds, fighters and weapons, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.

A meeting of the council attended by Prime Minister Tony Abbott has backed a binding, US-drafted resolution dealing with foreign fighters.

Ms Bishop, who has returned to Canberra after also taking part in diplomatic talks in New York, said Australia welcomed the resolution.

"We have to starve these terrorist organisations of funds, of fighters and of weapons," she told AAP on Thursday.

"This resolution gives the ballast to that international commitment."

Ms Bishop plans to meet travel industry representatives in December to discuss ways to prevent people from going to terrorism hotspots.

"This is an ongoing battle that will take months and years."

Australia is waiting for an analysis of how many countries will be involved in a new Iraq mission before making a final commitment to it, Ms Bishop said.

Australia has pre-deployed RAAF Super Hornets and special forces to United Arab Emirates ahead of a decision on the Iraq mission.
