As the government proposes new laws to ban asylum seekers on Nauru and Manus Island from ever entering Australia, the United Nations special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants will visit the country.

Francois Crepeau will tour Australia, as well as offshore centres on Nauru, from Tuesday until November 18, meeting with a range of government officials, the Human Rights Commission and migrants themselves.

"This is an opportunity for me to understand how Australia manages its overall migration policies, and their impact on the human rights of migrants,'' he said.
