‘I’m going to deck Decker’s': Ugg-ly legal stoush between Aussie battler and US footwear giant

One of the last authentic Aussie Ugg boot manufacturers istaking on an American giant in a David and Goliath court battle.

US footwear titan Decker's bought the rights to the name Ugg Australia during the 1990s, and now sells $1.5 billion orf Ugg Australia boots a year.

Like most of the Ugg boots sold in Australia, Decker's are made from in China from materials sourced around the world.

However, the company is now suing Australian manufacturer Eddie Oygur, who sells Ugg boots locally and made from Australian sheepskin.

The "Ugg" name is the bone of contention, but Mr Oygur told A Current Affair it was a "generic" term.

Nonetheless, he said he would sell his house and spend $1 million to fight the case in the US.

"I know I'm doing the right thing for Australia, for Australians and for myself," he said.

Mr Oygur's western Sydney factory is one of just a few remaining authentic Australian Ugg boot manufacturers, where once there were 40.

He said cheaper Chinese-made imports were flooding the market.

Even Australian-made iconography is no guarantee a boot is locally-made.

Manufacturer Tony Butler said the majority were imported from China and then re-labelled once past customs.

Senator Nick Xenophon is supporting Mr Oygur's cause, even flying to the US with him for the case.

"He's mortgaged everything he owns to fight this case in the US and we think Americans need to know what is happening to this little Aussie battler," he said.

"After all, 'Ugg' is an Australian term, it's a quintessentially Australian product."

Mr Oygur said Decker's had demanded all his stock be sent to the US to be destroyed.

However, he said he was still determined.

"I'm coming over to the States," he said.

"I'm going to deck Decker's!"
