Uber Red Cross clothing drive: Donate unwanted clothes for those in need

The Uber Red Cross clothing drive, which has been running for three years, urges people to tuck into the back of their wardrobes to find unloved and hidden treasures that are completely forgotten about to help those in need.

It is estimated that Australians throw away about 6000 kilograms of fashion and textile waste every 10 minutes.

Red Cross Ambassador Alex Van Os urges people to look through their wardrobes to support the drive.

“The majority of us have an abundance of clothes that just sit there and clutter our wardrobes,” she told Weekend Today.

To donate unwanted clothes, simply bag them up and go onto the Uber app.

But instead of the Uber collecting a passenger, they will come and grab your bags of clothes.

The service will exclusively be available between midday and 4pm today.

The Red Cross are looking for quality over quantity.

Damaged clothes or thread-bare items with stains will not be accepted.

“It’s an opportunity to donate good quality brands and clothes that are in good condition,” Ms Van Os said.

“The funds that are raised from this go to help others and if it’s good quality, other people are going to want to buy it.”

Today’s Uber Red Cross clothing drive can only accept clothes, shoes and accessories.

Toys, books, furniture and electrical items should be donated the traditional way, in person at a store.
