Two bodies found after house fire at Penshurst in Sydney's south

Two bodies have been found after fire tore through a home in Sydney's south.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on King Georges Road in Penshurst at about 3.30am today to find the weatherboard house well alight.

Two men managed to escape the blaze and were taken to St George Hospital suffering from shock and smoke inhalation.

A couple who lived at the rear of the home were unaccounted for, and their bodies were found after the blaze was extinguished.

The bodies have not been formally identified and a post mortem examination will be conducted. 

The cause of the blaze is not known at this stage and police are investigating.

King Georges Road in Penhurst is closed northbound as emergency services, fire crews and investigators remain at the scene. 

Traffic is being diverted to Forest Road.

King Georges Road is open southbound but drivers should expect delays.
