A woman travelling in the back seat of a car in southern Sydney has died, after a truck apparently rear-ended the sedan.

The silver Holden sedan and courier truck were both travelling northbound on New Illawarra Road in Barden Ridge when they crashed about 4.30am today, police said.

It appears the truck ran up the back of the car, and the vehicles travelled for about 100m after the crash.

The driver and another passenger in the car have been taken to hospital with minor injuries, and the truck driver has been hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.

"One female passenger of the car is deceased, and others were taken to hospital for treatment. Both drivers will be undergoing blood and urine testing and investigations are continuing," a NSW Police Force spokesman said.

Police remain at the scene and diversions are in place via Heathcote Road.

The fatality follows the deaths of two motorcyclists in separate accidents in New South Wales yesterday.
