Five dead in fatal road crashes across Victoria in 24 hours

Police are pleading with drivers to take care after five people were killed on Victorian roads in as many collisions in the past 24 hours.

One man died when his motorcycle was involved in a head-on collision with a car in Victoria's southwest.

Police say the man, aged in his 30s, was travelling along Foxhow Road in Foxhow about 12.55am last night when his bike veered onto the wrong side of the road.

One of the passengers in the car, believed to be a woman aged in her 20s, suffered minor injuries.

The second road death occurred near Mount Moriac, when the driver a van lost control of his vehicle on the Princes Highway and collided with a tanker truck about 3.15am.

The van driver, believed to be aged in his 40s, died at the scene.

The third fatality occurred when a man died in a single-vehicle crash near Point Wilson at 3.30am, while a female motorcyclist was killed after colliding with an oncoming truck in Yea around 11am.

Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said the past 24 hours have been "absolutely devastating".

"In one day our officers have had to deliver death messages to not one, but four families," he said.

"They've had to tell people their loved ones are not coming home."

Since Mr Hill made his plea to the public, a fifth person has been killed on Victorian roads in a two-car crash in Melton just before 3pm.

The cars collided at the intersection of Barries Road and Coburns Road, killing one of the male drivers.

The other male driver is currently assisting police with enquiries. Both men were sole occupants of their cars.

The five deaths take Victoria's road toll for 2014 to 206 - 21 more than at the same time last year.

Mr Hill said it was time for the community to decide that enough is enough.

"Whether you're a driver, a rider or a pedestrian, everyone needs to take responsibility for road safety."
