Two killed in light plane crash north-east of Canberra

A New South Wales teenager was among two people killed in a light plane crash north-east of Canberra, police have confirmed this morning.

The 18-year-old from Albury was in the plane with a 31-year-old pilot from Victoria when the plane crashed.

Police said witnesses watched as the plane plunged into a paddock on Tallagandra Lane, Sutton, about 4.30pm yesterday.

Both the pilot and passenger died at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Essential Essential Energy confirmed the pair was performing "contracted aerial inspections" of the network before the crash.

"Essential Energy's thoughts remain with the families, friends and colleagues of the two people who died," she said, in a statement.

"Authorities are currently investigating the incident and Essential Energy is providing full support.

"It would not be appropriate for us to provide any further information while the police investigation is underway."

Police have been told the Cessna 172 left Canberra Airport about 1.30pm.

Officers from the Hume police district established a crime scene and were investigating the cause of the crash.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has been notified.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
