Two injured in Sydney cafe gas explosion

Two people have been injured in a gas explosion at a cafe in Sydney's CBD.

A NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman confirmed the injured man and woman suffered "flash burns" to their hands and face shortly before 12pm when a gas explosion tore through The Gardens cafe kitchen on the corner of Bridge and George streets.

Witnesses at the scene reported feeling the ground shake and a horrific smell that followed, as paramedics wheeled one of the victims from the building wrapped in special burns material.

"I just heard a massive pop. It's quite scary. Unbelievable," one witness said.

Both have been taken to hospital and are said to be in stable conditions.

An exclusion zone has been set up around the area.

Drivers have been told to expect delays.
