A father and son are in hospital after what police say was a targeted shooting in inner-city Sydney.

Police say Michael Smart, 49, was shot in the head while his 23-year-old son Josh was shot in the back in Pyrmont on Sunday night.

Both men are known to police.

Officers were called to Jones Street just before 11pm, where they found the wounded men outside their home.

A neighbour told reporters he heard about six shots.

Michael Smart is in a critical condition in hospital while his son is now listed as stable.

Local detectives have been joined by police from Operation Talon, which was set up to investigate gun crime in Sydney.

Police are appealing for information from the public.

In a separate shooting in Sydney's west on Sunday, shots were fired into a house in Bonnyrigg shortly after 11pm but no one was injured.
